Why Gran Canaria in winter?
The south of Gran Canaria has a subtropical desert climate: dry, sunny and stable. Rain is rare here, almost all of the island's rainfall comes down in the mountainous north. Daytime highs stay between 22 and 25 °C throughout the winter, the sea sits between 19 and 22 °C, and evenings cool to 15-18 °C, so a light sweater comes in handy.
Practically speaking: you fly from Amsterdam, Brussels or Düsseldorf to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) in roughly 4.5 hours. From there it is some 30 to 35 kilometres to Maspalomas. There is no time difference with the UK and just one hour with the Netherlands, and you need no visa or vaccinations, Gran Canaria is part of Spain, and therefore of the EU.
